 absence

(n.)

不在,缺席 (Someone's absence from a place is the fact that they are not there.)

EX1. Her absence from his birthday party upset him.

        她沒出席他的生日派對讓他很苦惱

EX2. I know she often speaks  ill of me in my absence

         我知道她常趁我不在時說我的壞話

EX. She was absent this morning.

EX. I can tell that he is absent-minded now. What happened to him?

       我可以看得出來他現在心不在焉。他發生什麼事了?

 

 grow

(vi.) 

1. 漸漸變得 (You use grow to say that someone or something gradually changes until they have a new quality, feeling, or attitude.)

EX. He grew to love his work. /I grew (= became) a little afraid of the guy next door.

      他漸漸喜歡上他的工作。/ 我漸漸變得有點害怕隔壁的那個男生

2. 增大,增加,發展 ( If the economy or a business grows, it increases in wealth, size, or importance. )

EX. The economy continues to grow. 

       經濟持續成長

3. 生長,成長,發育 (When people, animals, and plants grow, they increase in size and change physically over a period of time. / When someone's hair grows, it gradually becomes longer. Your nails also grow.)

EX. We stop growing at maturity./ The boys grew into men.

      我們在成人期就停止發育。/ 這些男孩發育成男人了

4. 由某處產生 (If something such as an idea or a plan grows out of something else, it develops from it.)

EX. The idea for this book grew out of conversations with Philippa Brewster.

       這本書的構想來自於和 Philippa Brewster的對話。

(vt.)

1. 種植 (If you grow a particular type of plant, you put seeds or young plants in the ground and look after them as they develop.)

EX. I always grow a few onions.

      我一直都會種一些洋蔥

2. 使生長,留(毛髮或指甲) (If someone grows their hair, or grows a beard or moustache, they stop cutting their hair or shaving so that their hair becomes longer. You can also grow your nails.)

EX. I'd better start growing my hair.

      我最好開始把頭髮留長

 

 fond

(adj.)

1. 溫柔深情的 (You use fond to describe people or their behaviour when they show affection.)

EX. The fond father gave his son a hug./ He gave her a fond smile.

      這個溫柔的爸爸給他的兒子一個擁抱。/他給她一個溫柔深情的微笑

2. 喜歡的 (If you are fond of someone, you feel affection for them./ If you are fond of something, you like it or you like doing it very much.)

EX.  I am very fond of (=like) Michael./ She is fond of (like) collecting rare carpets.

       我很喜歡Michael。/她喜歡蒐集稀有的地毯

3. 希望渺茫的 (You use fond to describe hopes, wishes, or beliefs which you think are foolish because they seem unlikely to be fulfilled.)

EX. My fond hope is that we will be ready by Christmas.  

      我們在聖誕節前會一切就緒的希望渺茫
